As an individual interested in becoming a project manager or currently performing as one, association with PMI and the Hampton Roads Chapter can help you grow your career.  You don’t need to have the title of “Project Manager” to be doing the work.  In fact, many members of this chapter don’t.

Personal development is one of the key benefits of membership.  Here are some specific things that you can expect as a member of our chapter:

Monthly Education Opportunities

The regular dinner meetings include a presentation by someone that is directly related to project management.  These sessions vary from specific project discussions (ie. the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Program Manager) to personal development topics (ie. Steve Flannes on Conflict Management).  The presentations are engaging, cross-industry events that are sure to keep you involved and coming back.  Check out our upcoming events.

Periodic Seminars

Periodically through the year PMIHR hosts special events that are more focused and in-depth than the dinner meetings.  These include such topics as the PMP Exam Preparation Class and the Steve Flannes seminar.  Typically a full day long, they are a cost effective way to continue your education and develop your career.

Monthly Networking Opportunity

Most would agree that business gets done by people through relationships.  The monthly dinner meetings are a key opportunity to start and grow these relationships across industries and with people that have a common interest in project management.  There is a part of the event that is specifically set aside for this to happen.  The PMIHR chapter is a group of professionals that is always welcoming to new faces.  Whether you’re looking to grow your business network, or just want to meet people with common challenges, successes and goals, PMIHR can be a forum for your efforts.

Convenient to Peninsula and Southside

The chapter covers a wide territory with over 800 members.  To accommodate those on both sides of the water, meetings and other events are held at alternating locations.  While attendance is encouraged at all events regardless of location, we all understand the challenges of getting to “the other side of the water” in the afternoon.  So, each month the dinner meeting is held at either Newport News or Norfolk.

Volunteer Opportunities

Once you’ve seen what the chapter can offer, you may find that you want to be involved at a higher level.  There are numerous opportunities – the PMIHR chapter is a completely volunteer organization.  There are committees, board positions and special projects that are always open for involvement.  These efforts range from Board President to Committee Member or simply “volunteer”.  All efforts are greatly appreciated and many come with benefits such as PDUs (professional development units) that help certified Project Managers maintain their certification.
